Fused Quartz vs. Fused Silica: Material Science Insights

Understand atomic morphology, impurity control metrics, and transmission bands to prevent vacuum failures and optical degradation.

JGS1 (Synthetic Fused Silica)

Synthesized through chemical vapor deposition of silicon halides with oxygen. It exhibits exceptional deep ultraviolet transparency down to 185 nm without solarization. With hydroxyl content controlled to < 5 ppm, it is critical for excimer lasers, DUV lithography optics, and ultra-high-precision semiconductor inspection.

JGS2 (Optical Grade Quartz)

Formed through high-temperature oxyhydrogen flame fusion of purified natural quartz crystal sand. Transmits cleanly from 220 nm to 2500 nm. JGS2 represents the industry workhorse for viewports, UV sterilization lamps, CVD process observation windows, and medical instrumentation where high transmission and structural rigidity intersect.

JGS3 (Infrared Grade Silica)

Electrically fused in vacuum environments, driving hydroxyl (OH⁻) ions down to undetectable levels (< 2 ppm). This virtually eliminates the 2.73 μm absorption band, enabling seamless transmission from 260 nm far into the mid-infrared up to 3500 nm. Ideal for pyrometry viewports, IR laser heaters, and analytical flow cells.

Quartz Sheet Procurement Trends: 2025–2030

How semiconductor node shrinkage, EUV lithography, and photovoltaic N-type cell transitions are redefining technical sourcing requirements.

1. Trace Alkali Metal Depletion

Sub-5nm semiconductor fabs can no longer tolerate classic semiconductor-grade quartz. Trace elements like Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), and Iron (Fe) act as mobile gate contaminants. Global procurement is shifting directly towards multi-stage acid-leached high-purity natural silica sand (> 99.998%) with cumulative trace metallic impurities held strictly below 8 ppm.

2. Large-Format Monolithic Substrates

Photovoltaic TOPCon and HJT cell production requires massive tube chambers and rectangular quartz sheets up to 800 mm × 1200 mm. Maintaining structural integrity, parallelism (< 0.02 mm), and zero sagging during prolonged 1150°C thermal oxidation drives the transition to hot isostatically pressed (HIP) dense silica structures with optimized viscosity parameters.

3. Stress Birefringence Normalization

High-energy laser optical systems demand rigorous polarization testing. Conventional visual checks are replaced by strict automated polariscopic inspection verifying optical path difference (OPD) ≤ 5 nm/cm. Annealing ovens with precision cooling gradients under computer PID control ensure that thermal residual stresses never induce in-situ fracture during pulse laser strikes.

Frequently Asked Questions by Industrial Sourcing Teams

Clear, technically accurate answers to mitigate international procurement risks, customs clearance concerns, and engineering verification issues.

What is the key differentiator between JGS1, JGS2, and JGS3 quartz plates?
The fundamental distinction lies in chemical synthesis, raw materials, and hydroxyl content. JGS1 is synthetic fused silica providing high deep-UV transmission (185–2500 nm) with zero bubbles. JGS2 is natural crystal flame-fused quartz suited for optical and UV lamp windows (220–2500 nm). JGS3 is vacuum electrically fused silica with near-zero hydroxyl radicals (< 2 ppm), eliminating the 2.73 μm absorption band for high infrared transmission up to 3500 nm.
How does Lovri Quartz handle thermal shock prevention on large sheets?
Thermal shock fractures in fused quartz stem almost entirely from residual mechanical stresses and uneven structural expansion. Because our material exhibits a minuscule thermal expansion coefficient (5.5 × 10⁻⁷ / °C), our quality control focuses on strict batch annealing at 1215°C followed by polarized stress analysis. This enables our quartz sheets to safely cycle from 1100°C continuous heat down to water quenching without cracking.
What dimensional tolerances can you achieve on CNC custom quartz parts?
With our 5-axis high-speed CNC machining centers, precision diamond tooling, and ultrasonic milling capabilities, we reliably achieve outer diameter and length tolerances of ±0.05 mm, hole pitch precision of ±0.02 mm, and polished surface flatness of λ/4 to λ/10 per 25 mm aperture. For ultra-thin plates (0.1 mm to 0.5 mm), thickness parallelism is maintained within ±0.01 mm.
How are fragile quartz sheets guaranteed against breakage during export?
All export shipments utilize heavy-duty multi-layer protection: optical parts are sealed with anti-scratch protective film in dust-free cleanrooms, vacuum packed, encased in custom-molded high-density EVA shock-absorbing foam, and sealed inside reinforced composite wooden cases with metal corner stays. All cargo includes external impact/tilt indicator stickers for maritime, air, and courier transport.
What is your prototyping policy and Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?
We support prototyping and design validation with an MOQ as low as 1 piece for customized plates, CNC wafer boats, and specialized laser tubes. Once geometric specs and tolerances are approved by your engineering team, volume production can scale seamlessly to thousands of pieces per month with standardized lot traceability.
Are full material inspection certificates (COA) provided with deliveries?
Yes. Every production run is accompanied by a comprehensive Certificate of Analysis (COA) verifying SiO₂ purity, spectral transmission curves, dimensional CMM inspection reports, and RoHS compliance documentation. Trace elemental analyses via ICP-MS are available upon request for semiconductor clients.
